CITY MANAGER’S UPDATE

Brian Dossey, City Manager

Protecting our precious natural resources and fragile environment is vital to our sustainability. It is also the law in California.  The state mandates greenhouse gas reductions and landfill diversion rates which include recycling and composting.  The Town of Colma is well on its way to reaching the conservation targets included in its climate action plan.

To remind us how our activities of daily living can affect the health of our planet, the Town is participating in the 8th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, which takes place during the month of April.  To participate, residents can enter the name Colma at www.mywaterpledge.com and make a series of online pledges to conserve water and energy. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category are deemed the winner. Participants are entered to win an array of environmentally positive prizes.

In partnership with CalWater and Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency, residents may obtain free water conservation kits, rebates for low flow toilets and efficient washing machines and cash for grass in addition to rain barrel purchase subsidies.  The Town of Colma is leveraging those rebates with its own financial incentives for purchasing of energy efficient appliances including washing machines and toilets!  More information is available at Town Hall at (650) 997-8300, or on the Town’s website.

In addition, beginning April 1 through April 30th, residents who come by Town Hall, Sterling Park or the Colma Community with proof that they took the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation pledge will be given a token of appreciation, and a chance to win two tickets to the Town Holiday Party!  If you need help taking the pledge, staff at any of the three facilities will assist you.  Please take the pledge and participate in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

RECREATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Cynthia Morquecho, Recreation Services Manager

The Town of Colma has some great Community Events scheduled for this Spring. Both events are geared towards recycling or disposing of unwanted items, trash and debris from your home and Town:

  • Town Wide Garage Sale – Saturday, April 27, 2019

Mark your calendar! The Town of Colma is hosting the 9th Annual Town-Wide Garage Sale on Saturday April 27th, 2019. With garage sales located throughout the Verano and Sterling Park Neighborhood, residential areas of Colma will be filled with bargain hunting customers! This is a great opportunity to sell old and unwanted items you no longer wish to own.  Remember, your old unwanted items may be considered a treasure to someone else.

  • Town Wide Clean Up Day – Saturday, May 18, 2019

After your Garage Sale, bring any unsold items or unwanted recyclables, trash or debris to our collection center at the Corp Yard at 601 F Street, between 9am-12pm.  This is your chance to remove items stored in your yard and contribute to keeping our community clean and attractive.  Also, Town Wide Clean Up Day is your opportunity to take pride in your Town by helping fellow residents and staff in cleaning up the streets of Colma, including areas around the Colma Creek.  Participants and staff will also walk various locations in Colma picking up trash and recycling materials, and afterwards we will celebrate our Clean Town with a family fun BBQ at Sterling Park.  Volunteers need to register for the Town Wide Clean Up Day at the Colma Community Center by May 17, 2019.

Please sign up for both new Community events by stopping by the Colma Community Center or Sterling Park Recreation Center.

Also don’t forget to join Colma Recreation Staff for our annual Family Field Day!  This event emphasizes outdoor recreation and activity! Enjoy public spaces and to participate in a day filled with field activities for you and your family at Sterling Park.  Play family friendly games such as soccer, kickball, and field games.  We will provide lunch and refreshments, and all the equipment needed for your family to enjoy the day.   The event will take place on Saturday, May 4th from 11:00pm – 4:00pm at Sterling Park Recreation Center.  Please R.S.V.P. for this event at the Colma Community Center – (650) 985-5678.
