Assault with Deadly Weapon Against a Peace Officer and Burglary of Auto Dealership
Colma, CA – On 01/11/2021, Colma Police Officers responded to the 400 block of Serramonte Boulevard to the report of a vehicle theft in progress with two subjects attempting to steal multiple vehicles. Officers located the suspects, who then drove at an officer at a high rate of speed, and then fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a loaded firearm. The suspects were identified as Kayla Gutierrez, a 28-year old from Alameda, and Matt Lake, a 39-year old from Union City. After an extensive search, both suspects were located and arrested without incident and booked into the San Mateo County Jail.
At approximately 05:50am, officers were dispatched to the report of an auto theft in progress in the 400 block of Serramonte Boulevard. Officers arrived on scene and located two suspects in the process of stealing two vehicles. As the subjects were being contacted, they fled into another stolen vehicle and drove in the officer’s direction at a high rate of speed, causing him to dive out of the way to prevent from being struck. The suspects then fled on foot into a nearby cemetery. With the assistance of nearby agencies, a perimeter was set up and a search was conducted. Officers then located another vehicle that was associated to the suspects in a nearby parking lot. That vehicle was determined to have been stolen recently out of San Francisco.
At approximately 10:24am, officers located Gutierrez in the 200 block of Collins Avenue. Gutierrez attempted to flee from officers but was arrested without incident. Gutierrez was transported to a local hospital and later released after receiving medical treatment for a minor injury sustained during her flight. At approximately 11:43am, officers located Lake in the 1300 block of El Camino Real and he was arrested without incident. Both suspects were transported to the Colma Police Department and provided Mirandized statements, admitting to numerous thefts throughout the Bay Area. Lake and Gutierrez were transported and booked into San Mateo County Jail on numerous charges.

Charges: Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Second Degree Burglary, Vehicle Theft, Attempted Vehicle Theft, Obstruct/Resist a Peace Officer, and additional misdemeanor charges.
