The El Camino Real Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Project

Project Description

The El Camino Real ((State Route 82, “ECR”) Bicycle and Pedestrian Project implements Complete and Green Street improvements from Albert M Teglia Blvd in Colma to Hickey Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco.  The purpose of this Project is to improve multi-modal infrastructure, traffic operations, accessibility, and safety along the El Camino Real and meet future housing needs and demands. The project area is divided into three segments; Segment (A) from Albert M. Teglia Boulevard to Mission Road in the Town, Segment (B) from Mission Road to Arlington Drive in the Town, and Segment (C) from Arlington Drive to Hickey Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco.

The proposed improvements along ECR corridor include sidewalks, protected bike lanes, ADA curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, street lighting, landscaping, stormwater treatment measures, bus stop improvements, reconfiguration of ECR/Mission Road intersection, installation of traffic signals at ECR/Mission and ECR/Collins intersections.

Current Status

Currently, the Town is working on the Project Study Report-Project Development Support (PSR-PDS) pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guideline 15306.   The PSR-PDS will serve as the Project Initiation Document (PID) for the Project, to be completed in September 2024, subject to Caltrans approval. The PSR-PDS will identify the Project need and purpose, stakeholder inputs, project alternatives, potential right-of-way needs, preliminary environmental analysis, initial costs, and funding sources. The PSR-PDS approval will move the project into the Project Approval and Environmental Document (PA&ED) phase, which is already funded through a Measure W grant from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (SMCTA).
