Recycling, Waste Reduction Requirements for Residents & Businesses
Colma and other California jurisdictions are required to comply with state laws that are included below:
AB 1826 Mandatory Commercial Organics Waste Recycling Law
AB 1826 requires businesses and multi-family complexes that generate organic waste to arrange for organics collection services. Businesses and multi-family complexes are considered in compliance with the law if they participate in the commercial organics recycling program provided by Republic.
What is Organic Waste? Food, yard waste/ landscape/tree trimmings, lumber, wood, manure, cardboard, paper products, other plant and animal-based products are organic waste
AB 341 The Mandatory Commercial Recycling Law, AB 341
AB 341 requires all businesses that generate four (4) or more cubic yards of garbage per week and multi-family complexes with five (5) or more units to arrange for recycling collection services.
SB 1383 Mandatory Organics Collection for All Residents and Businesses
SB 1383 will reduce disposal of organic waste by 75% (20+ million tons annually) by 2025. This law also requires edible food recovery, recycled organics procurement, and organics recycling education. More to come on these programs!
Why is SB 1383 Important?
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving health, creating green jobs, supporting a resilient local economy is a priority for the Town of Colma and California. Organic waste makes up half of what Californians send to landfills. Reducing organic waste to landfills greatly reduces harmful, super pollutants such as methane. Organic waste in landfills emit 20% of California’s methane, a climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
